What is a PLC ?

PLC actually stands for Programmable Logic Controller.In layman language a PLC is an electrical alternative of a microcontroler. A microcontroller coupled with relays form a PLC. The PLCs take input from different type of sensors and HMIs which is then processed by the microcontroller /CPU to take the necessary action for the output devices. In case of a PLCs the output devices are not just the displays they may be motors, actuators, special function modules etc.All industrial machines and assembly lines are controlled using  PLCs. Even the most advanced arrays of robotic arms are based on PLCs.

What is the difference between a PLC and a microcontroller ?

Both microcontrollers and PLCs operates on small DC voltages of around 3.3v to 12v but the difference lies in the components that are controlled using these two. Microcontrollers are generally used to control dc devices that operate on a similar voltage as that of the controller. On the contrary PlCs are used to control both DC and AC devices which are much higher in their current and voltage rating as compared to the controller.
